BUILT FOR ALBERTA. POWERED BY FIBER.

Aurora Internet isn’t just fast. It’s smart. It’s local, and it’s built for the people who call Alberta home.

Take a look around your home, and you’ll realize you need internet that keeps up with you. Often people overlook smart light bulbs and thermostats, video door bells, and home hubs like Alexa, Echo and Google Nest. And everything you connect to Bluetooth is also on the wifi network.

If you lose internet, you’ll lose connection to a lot more than you think in your home.

At Northern Lights Fiber, we’re focused on keeping you connected – fast, reliably and supported by local Albertans, for local Albertans.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Construction & General

What is Northern Lights Fiber bringing to my community?

We are making a major, long-term investment in your community — building a fiber-optic infrastructure of the magnitude that has historically only reached large urban centres. Once it’s in the ground, the same line will continue to serve your home for generations, keeping pace with how internet is used decades from now.

Our aim is to provide the fastest, most reliable internet available in your area — for homes, businesses, and the community as a whole — supported by a team based here in Alberta.

Canadian Fiber Optics Corp (CFOC) is the parent-operating company that designs, builds, and
maintains the fiber networks. Northern Lights Fiber is CFOC’s customer-facing brand — the name you’ll
see on residential and small-business services. Both companies share the same team, technology, and infrastructure, which is why emails come from the canadianfiberoptics.ca domain.

Our construction crews are authorized contractors working on behalf of the project. All crews are required to follow municipal regulations, sitespecific permits, and project safety standards while completing this work. They must also follow CFOC’s high standard of safety standards, conduct while on site, and keep sites clean and orderly.

If a safety concern is observed, please report it immediately to: [email protected]

These are locates — markers placed by utility locators to identify buried infrastructure such as gas, electrical, water, and sewer lines. This tells our crews where it is safe to dig and where it is not. Locates are critical for the safety of our crews and the protection of your property, so please do not remove or move them.

In Alberta, locates are typically valid for 30-60 days. They will be removed or fade after our work in the area is complete.

For non-urgent construction concerns, please email [email protected] and allow up to 5 working days for a response. For urgent situations, call our Customer Care team at 1-855-652-0398.

Our crews take care to cause as little disturbance as possible. Where the drop crew uses a plow, it leaves a small line in the grass that we backfill. In some locations we need to make small holes in driveways or surfaces to access tools or junctions; these are repaired afterward.

This is a substantial infrastructure project, and some surface impact is unavoidable. We do our best to minimize it and to restore affected areas after the work is done.

We bury a small conduit from the street network to your home — this is called “the drop”. In most cases, the conduit runs through the side or back yard to a small weatherproof box mounted on the side of your house, called a NID (Network Interface Device). The fiber line enters the home through the NID.

Note: Buried fiber infrastructure is still uncommon for rural properties in Canada, and some real estate research suggests it can have a positive effect on property value.

Not necessarily. Your Fiber Access Request agreement (more on a FAR below) will permit us to enter your yard when you are not home. If there is information you want to share with the construction crew, please email [email protected].

For example: if you have an underground irrigation or sprinkler system that would not be a registered underground utility, let us know. We will not mark your property without your permission (FAR explained below).

A couple of things help our crews work efficiently:

  • Keep the work area clear of major obstructions where possible
  • Keep pets indoors while crews are working in your yard (after you grant us permission)

How quickly we can activate internet at your home depends largely on whether a Fiber Access Request (FAR) has been completed for your property, and on the timing of mainline construction in your area. There are three common scenarios:

FAR signed before mainline construction reaches your area. This is the fastest path. The drop — the underground line from the street to your home — is buried while our mainline crews are already working in the neighbourhood. After splicing (the step that joins the fibers together) is complete, our team will contact you, typically 2 to 3 weeks ahead, to book the indoor service installation.

FAR already signed and the drop is in place. If construction in your area is already complete and your drop has been buried, the only remaining step is signing up for service. Once you do, our team will reach out to schedule the indoor installation.

FAR signed after mainline construction has finished. Activation takes considerably longer in this case. A crew would need to be brought back to your area to bury the drop as a separate visit, and the indoor service installation can only be scheduled once that’s done. Depending on crew availability and how many other drops are pending, this can mean a significant wait.

This is the main reason we encourage residents to submit a FAR early — even without committing to service. Signing the FAR while crews are still in your community is the difference between a quick connection and a long wait.

The indoor installation itself usually takes about two hours, although some homes may take longer depending on layout and existing wiring. The customer service representative who schedules your appointment can answer any specific questions about what to expect.

FARS & SIGNING UP FOR SERVICE

What Is a Fiber Access Request (FAR)?

Homeowners are encouraged to submit a Fiber Access Request form (FAR). The FAR grants permission for our mainline crews to run fiber underground from the rights-of-way to your home during the construction-window for your area.

If permission is not granted by way of the FAR, returning after the construction window has passed risks a longer lead time. It also means the fiber will be coiled to the edge of your property only — along the rights-of-way — rather than brought all the way to your home. There may also be a cost for the drop in the future.

You can choose to wait to request a drop and installation until you’re ready to switch providers. However, if the construction window has already passed, connection timing may vary and additional costs could apply.

Signing a FAR does not cost anything. If you are within the prescribed service area and submit a FAR within the construction-window, most often the cost of the drop (the underground installation of the fiber line from the street onto your property) is covered. Submitting a FAR does not commit you to any service contract with Northern Lights Fiber. The form includes an opt-in or opt-out for service, leaving that choice entirely up to you.

No—while signing a FAR helps prioritize your address, installation is completed at our discretion during the construction window, with early sign-ups typically served first and additional connections added as time allows.
